Watch the video above as I talk about schedules and planning for the upcoming school year. Read below for some highlights and printable resources to help you prepare for this year!
1. Know when to throw the schedules in the trash (1:32-3:12 on the video)
I am a huge planner and list maker. As weird as it sounds this is one of my favorite things to do. Something I learned early on as a parent is there are days when it is impossible for things to be as organized as I would like. Life happens and sometimes you have to let go of the plan for everyone's sanity.
2. Weekly schedules (3:55-10:27 parent schedules and 10:28-12:22 kids schedules on the video)
I use a weekly schedule to keep both me and my kids on track. All of our activities, their school work and chores are on the weekly schedule so there really isn't a time that they should say "I'm bored" or "I don't know what to do". Below is a blank printable version of the weekly schedule I use. Watch the video for a sample of both mine and my kids weekly schedules.
3. Schedules for younger kids (12:30-15:10 on the video)
My four year old also has a weekly schedule but hers looks different. Since she can't read yet I use pictures and words for the things she is to do everyday. I also use morning, afternoon and evening as opposed to specific times since she can't tell time yet. The document below is provided through google docs so you can edit it. Please make a copy first before you edit the document.
4. Special Days (15:10-17:00 on the video)
Schooling at home can be monotonous at times so special days are essential for me. On Mondays we're going to do "Make It Mondays" where we will be either doing an art project or baking something and "Fun Fridays" where we will either go to a park or do something fun if everyone tries their best during the week. I'll be featuring these on our Youtube channel if you'd like to subscribe for ideas and inspiration.
5. Cleaning Schedules (17:12-23:36 on the video)
Yes, I even have a weekly cleaning schedule. Before I had kids I cleaned as I went most of the time but would deep clean once a week usually on Friday. I also did all my laundry on Fridays too. After kids this did not work and after years of frustration I found a schedule that works for me, well kind of. Each day I deep clean one area or zone of my house along with spend 30-45 minutes doing a quick clean up of our entire house at least that's the idea. This keep my house pretty clean generally but with babies and now a clingy toddler their are days I don't feel like holding a child while trying to clean. On those weeks I'll double up one day or do some cleaning on Sundays. Watch the video to see what I do each day to keep my house clean and use the printable cleaning schedule below to create your own. If you want a different layout I used canva to create this for free!

6. Schedules Are Important
Yes, schedules are important. Kids thrive with predictability and everything goes a little smoother when everyone has clear direction. I encourage everyone to come up with a schedule that will work for your family before the school year begins. Even though schedules are very important it is okay to toss them out the door for a day if it is causing stress.
