This month we are turning our focus to thankfulness and giving. Each day during the week we are reading a Bible verse or book about thankfulness or giving. Then my older kids are spending time reflecting with their thankful journals. I will be posting the journal pages created with Canva we are doing at the end of each week for you to print them to use with your kid(s) if you would like. November is a great month to pause and reflect on what we have to be thankful for!
Thankful Journal: Week One
Thankful Journal Cover Page: What does being thankful mean? Why is it important to be thankful? Spend time discussing giving thanks as you decorate the journal cover page.
Give Thanks To The Lord: Read 1 Chronicles 16:34
Give Thanks In All Circumstances: Read 1 Thessalonians 5:18
I Will Rejoice: Read I Will Rejoice by Karma Wilson and Psalm 118:24
Blessings Jar: Read Blessings Jar: A Story About Being Thankful by Colleen Coble
Thankful Journal: Week Two
The Thankful Leper: Read Luke 17:11-18
Psalms 107:1: Read the bible verse and color the bible verse. Talk about all the ways God is good!
Devote yourself to prayer: Read Colossians 4:2, discuss how to pray.
James 1:17: Read the verse and spend time thinking about it before you pray.
Philippians 4:6: Read the verse. Is there something you are worried about today? Write it on your prayer journal page and pray that God would replace your worry with thanksgiving.
Thankful Journal: Week Three
Give Cheerfully: Read 2 Corinthians 9:7. Discuss praying about giving and how we can cultivate an attitude of cheerfully giving.
Proverbs 19:17: Read the verse. Plan to serve as a family doing a local service project, at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen.
1 John 3:17: Read the verse. Discuss how we can give with things you already have. Gather toys and items that are gently used. Work together to clean them and find a local organization or person to donate to.
Proverbs 11:24-25: Read the verse. Reflect during your journal time about how gifts such as an encouraging word, smile or being kind can be just as valuable as tangible gifts. How can we give these gifts to others more?
Read: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
Thankful Journal: Week Four
Read: Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig
Discuss: Ways you can show small acts of kindness. Have you ever felt like the little boy in the story? How can you be a good friend?
Journal about a time or how you can help someone feel seen that may not feel that way?
Read: Pass it on by Sophy Henn
Game: Think of small kind acts you can do for others today. Make sure to tell them to pass it on!
Read: Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts
Discuss: It's easy to think of all the things we went but giving to others can be hard especially when we are giving them something we want.
Read: The Gift Inside the Box by Adam Grant
Activity Idea: Send a surprise gift to someone
Read: Thanks a Million by Nikki Grimes
For your last journal page, decorate a blank paper then write a thankful poem on it. Remember to draft your poem on notebook paper before you write your final draft for your thankful journal!
